On 9th November 2022, the Cluster for Logistics Luxembourg hosted the 6th edition of the Lean & Green Awards at the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce and presented the Lean & Green Awards 2022 in presence of Mr Claude Turmes, Minister of Energy and Spatial Planning. At this year’s Lean & Green Awards 2022, three additional companies were awarded for their efforts and achievements regarding the reduction of CO2 emissions generated from transport and logistics activities.
The president of the Cluster for Logistics, Carlo Thelen, says: "Especially, the energy-intensive transport and logistics sector, where fuel prices have doubled and can account for more than 50% of the operating costs, has been hit hard by geopolitical developments in eastern Europe. Thus, these developments have shown how important it is for companies to understand their carbon footprint and drive sustainable transformation to reduce dependence on fossil fuels."
With rising energy prices and increasing sustainability requirements, companies are bound to reduce their CO2 output. Minister Claude Turmes was glad to meet LEAN & GREEN projects to enhance energy efficiency. Interministerial groups for logistics in cooperation with Luxinnovation and the House of Startups are currently working on studies and projects for a better energy grid and charging infrastructure. A recent investment call of 5 million euros allowed for 700 additional charging stations and a new call will be launched in January.
The ministry is working on a CO2 tax exemption regime on HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) for 2023. Plans also include a support regime for zero carbon trucks. A first hydrogen fuel station is being built but the infrastructure in the Greater region must be strengthened.
Two new candidates and a 2 Star winner
The Lean & Green programme welcomes a new 2 Star Winner. LuxairCARGO managed to reduce its CO2 consumption by more than 30 percent compared to 2012. The company was a forerunner in the programme and received the label in 2015 and the first star award in 2018. Among other measures, the company replaced their freezer units with more efficient models and installed modern lighting in the Cargocenter.
Furthermore, 2 companies have decided to join the Lean & Green initiative in Luxembourg in 2022. Karp-Kneip and Eurogaume have set up audited and eligible action plans that provide both companies the framework to reduce their CO2 emissions from transport and logistics activities by at least 20% within the coming 5 years. For the commitment of joining the program and developing individual action plans to allow to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, both companies were awarded the Lean & Green Label.
The Lean & Green program is a sustainable logistics initiative which is offered by the Cluster for Logistics Luxembourg, in collaboration with the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, since 2014 in Luxembourg. Over the past 7 years, the Cluster for Logistics Luxembourg has already supported 13 transport and logistics companies their sustainability efforts. The Lean & Green initiative envisions to induce companies from the logistics and transportations sector to implement a set of self-defined optimization measures in order to reduce their CO2 emissions linked to transportation activities by at least 20%. By taking a closer look at their logistics activities and rethinking their current business processes, the companies participating at the program are able to identify potential for savings and optimization, and thus to make the best use of their resources by saving costs (Lean) and reducing CO2 emissions (Green).
