Bascharage bypass solution unveiled
Divers
The bypass around Bascharage is finally taking a step forward with a new proposal by the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works on 18th September 2023. The new route is similar to earlier plans but will not split the Bobësch forest but instead follow the train tracks. It should considerably reduce traffic in the localities of Bascharage, Sanem, Niederkorn and Pétange.
The project is complex and the updated plans will however require the company Saint-Gobain to give up the site, which could be moved to Wolser 2 near Dudelange. The variant is considered optimal by Minister François Bausch, considering it offers a solution with a low level of nature intervention.
In 2028, the budget for a similar route was approved by the parliament and is still valid. If Saint-Gobain accepts the move, the works could start in 2024 with a planned opening in 2029.
